Should I contact GO Peds even if I am planning on practicing medicine while on my international vacation?  Yes, we can help to facilitate your trip, you can use the GO Peds bag, and we will be a resource for you while you are away. You may find the rotation evaluation, site evaluation forms to be helpful. When you provide us information about your experience, it will help us to better counsel other residents who may be interested in similar experiences.

What happens if I want to go somewhere and I don't have Housestaff Office approval? You can still receive credit for the experience, but you may not be paid during your time away.

Where can I find foreign entry criteria for a country that I want to visit? Go to the State Department's website on Foreign Entry Criteria

Where can I find some practical information about practicing medicine in another country? Here are some clinical practice tips from Grad Correll, MD about practicing medicine in a majority world clinical setting. Here are some basic tips from Menlo Park Presbyterian Church about working with a translator.

What is the GO PEDS travel bag?  •The Travel Bag will include key References including Harriet Lane, a Condensed version of Nelsons, Medicine in Developing Countries and other resources.  •Educational equipment inlcuding a laptop for educational presentations  a LCD/Video Projector, video camera, digital camera. There is also Basic Medical Equipment including an Ophthalmoscope and Otoscope, pulse oximeter.

Where can I get an application? A copy of the application is on the GO PEDS website. CLICK HERE

Where can I get additional money to help pay for a medical mission/international rotation? We encourage our residents to  raise money for their trip by requesting support from family and friends or the options below (FUNDRAISING OPTIONS). Most people that you ask will find participating by financing a portion of your trip is a blessing, not a burden.

If you are not able to raise sufficient money you may apply for a grant from the Job Scholarship Fund. The fund provides you with funds needed to go! Funding and Re-imbursement Guidelines for Overseas Electives:

Goals:

- To reduce the financial burden of an overseas elective

- To foster the spirit of giving

Conditions:

1)     Payment up to half the resident's airfare (up to a maximum of $1000 per resident) provided the following conditions are met:

a)      A GO Peds application has been received and approved. GO Peds will approve rotations where the resident is providing care in the non-developed world or developing world.

b)      Rotation is at an Seventh-day Adventist affiliated hospital, clinic or orphanage or with Loma Linda Pediatric faculty - the housestaff office has not approved continuation of salaray or other benefits with other rotations. .

c)      Satisfactory completion of all requirements for the rotation for graduate medical education credit

d)      Written report of rotation stating goals accomplished, lessons learned, etc with permission to quote from reports for fundraising purposes

2)      Re-imbursement is given at the close of the rotation given all requirements are satisfied.

3) Recipients are encouraged to contribute to the fund once they have the financial resources to do so - usually after residency.

4) Reimbursement will only occur once during the resident's residency at Loma Linda University.

FUNDRAISING OPTIONS

9.     A more ambitious idea would be to research grant opportunities and apply for a grant for specific projects that residents could participate in especially if the projects are geared towards public health such as the AIDS crisis in Africa

10. Teaming up with the School of Public Health’s International Health MPH program- each MPH candidate has to do an overseas rotation
